Privacy Policy

AskPrice ("we," "us," or "our") is a free price-tracking site that displays recent price information for products at six US department stores. This policy explains what information is collected when you use the site, what we do with it, and what we don't do.
The short version: there are no accounts, we don't require any information that identifies you, we don't sell any data, and the items you save are stored in your own browser. We do use a small set of analytics and error-monitoring tools, described below.
No visitor accounts
AskPrice has no sign-up, no login, and no checkout for visitors. We do not ask for your name, email address, or payment details, and you can use every feature of the site without providing them. Limited technical data — like IP addresses in server logs and error reports — is collected automatically, as described below.
Analytics
We use two analytics tools to understand which pages and features are useful — page views, searches, saves, and similar product events. Both operate with pseudonymous identifiers that do not directly identify you; we do not connect them to a name, email, or other real-world identity, because we don't have any.
- PostHog (US-hosted) sets a cookie containing a random identifier for your device, so repeat visits count as one visitor instead of many. It records events such as page views, searches performed, items saved (including the product's id), collection pages viewed, and technical events such as failed image loads. We have disabled automatic interaction capture and session recording. PostHog requests are routed through our own domain rather than posthog.com, so content blockers that filter by domain may not detect them; blocking or deleting the PostHog cookie in your browser still prevents cross-visit identification.
- Google Analytics (via Google's gtag.js) sets standard
_gacookies and reports usage data such as page views and visit patterns to Google. For details on how Google processes this data, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services; Google's own privacy policy governs Google's handling of that data.
Like any web request, analytics requests carry your IP address and browser user agent; PostHog and Google process these to derive coarse location and device type.
Error monitoring
We use Sentry to catch errors and crashes so we can fix them. An error report may include technical details such as your browser user agent, the page URL, and what went wrong; the connection necessarily exposes your IP address to Sentry, which we do not use to identify you. A small sample of requests also includes performance timing data. This information is used for diagnosing and fixing problems and for the security and operation of the site.
Server logs
Like nearly every website, our servers keep short-term request logs containing IP address, browser user agent, requested URL, and timestamp. We use these for abuse prevention and operational diagnostics.
Saved items
When you "heart" a product, your saved list is stored only in your browser's localStorage — we keep no server-side copy of your list, and clearing your browser data will erase it. Two things do reach our servers along the way: when you open the Saved page, your browser asks our servers for the current prices of the items on your list (those product ids are processed to answer the request and appear in ordinary server logs, but are not saved to a profile of you); and saving an item emits a pseudonymous analytics event that includes the product's id.

To be explicit about both sides of this: usage and technical data does leave our servers — it flows to the analytics and monitoring providers named above (Google, PostHog, Sentry) and to the infrastructure providers that host and deliver the site (including Cloudflare, which serves our image CDN), each processing it to provide their service to us. We may also disclose information if required by law or legal process, to protect the security or integrity of the site, to enforce our terms, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. And we sell nothing here — no goods, and no data: we do not sell, rent, or trade any information collected on the site, and we do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or ad networks.
Cookies
The cookies set during normal use of the site are:
- PostHog cookie — a stable, random, pseudonymous identifier for your device, used for analytics.
- Google Analytics
_gacookies — Google's standard analytics cookies.
A staff-only admin area uses its own sign-in cookies; these are never set during normal browsing. We do not use advertising cookies, social media pixels, or any cross-site behavioral advertising technology.
How analytics starts depends on where you are visiting from, which we estimate from your IP address:
- California, and visitors whose location we can't determine (including outside the US): analytics is opt-in. A consent banner asks first; until you accept, the site loads no analytics scripts and sets no analytics cookies. Declining leaves you with a fully working site and zero analytics.
- The rest of the United States: analytics runs by default, and you can turn it off at any time via "Cookie settings" in the footer.
Your explicit choice always wins over the regional default, in both directions, and can be changed any time via "Cookie settings"; withdrawing consent stops collection and deletes the analytics cookies we can reach. The location estimate itself is stored in a small first-party cookie (ap-geo) that contains only the resulting mode — never your location. You can also block or delete cookies through your browser's settings, and Google offers a browser add-on to opt out of Google Analytics everywhere.
Affiliate links and retailer websites
Every "shop" link on AskPrice takes you to the retailer's own website. Once you leave our site, the retailer's privacy policy — not this one — governs any information you provide there.
Some outbound links may be affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy something — see our Terms of Service for details. An affiliate link includes a click identifier so the retailer's affiliate program can credit the referral to us; it carries no personal information about you from us, and the retailer and its affiliate network handle the click under their own privacy policies.
Do Not Track and California
Our site does not respond to Do Not Track (DNT) or Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signals. Those signals mainly tell sites not to sell your data or target ads at you — and we do neither, so there is nothing for them to switch off. To limit analytics, use your browser's cookie controls as described above.
California law asks websites to disclose what they collect, who they share it with, how they treat Do Not Track, and how to reach them — the sections above cover all of that. We do not sell personal information. If anything is unclear, email us and we'll answer.
Children
AskPrice is not directed to children under 13. The site has no accounts or forms, so no one — child or adult — can create a profile or submit personal information through the site; like any visit, a child's visit would still generate the technical data described above. If you believe we have somehow ended up with a child's data, email us and we will delete it.
Data retention
- Server logs are kept for up to 30 days.
- Sentry error reports are retained for 90 days (Sentry's standard retention period).
- Google Analytics user-level data retention is set to 14 months.
- PostHog analytics events are retained for up to one year under our current plan.
- Saved items live on your device for as long as your browser keeps them.
Data held by these services is used for the purposes described in this policy; if these periods change materially, we will update this section.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the limited data we handle, but no website can guarantee perfect security. Your saved-items list is stored on your own device.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update it on this page and revise the effective date at the top. If we make material changes, we may provide additional notice on the site. Your continued use of the site after a change takes effect means the updated policy applies.
